It is important to understand the effect that your lawn mower blades have on the grass that is being cut. A blade in poor condition will result in a lawn that is in poor condition as well. A dulled or damaged mower blade will rip the grass instead of providing a clean cut causing damage to the roots. When this happens, you will begin to see a brown and patchy yard. When this happens, it gives weeds a chance to grow and thrive. In fact, repeated mowing with a dull blade can literally destroy a yard.

Check the sharpness of your lawn mower blade at least once every two months. Before you do any maintenance on a lawn mower, make sure it cannot accidentally start by removing the spark plug wire in a gas powered mower. In an electric mower, take the battery out , or make sure that it is not plugged in. Also, be sure that if performing maintenance on a gas powered mower, that tipping it over will not result in the gas or oil spilling out.
To do this routine maintenance, you will need a wrench and a file for sharpening. Other options are available as well such as a blade balancer and sharpener kit. Take the wrench and remove the nut that attaches the blade to the deck. Then, following the angle of the cutting blade, pass the file along the edges to sharpen the blade. While you are sharpening, be sure to do so evenly on both sides of the blade otherwise, it may go out of balance and wobble while it spins.
Once a blade has become sufficiently worn down, you will want to order a new one. This can usually be done through the manufacturer, or bought at a local hardware store. Blades can also be ordered online through many different sites.
Maintaining the sharpness of a lawn mower's blade is very important. A bad blade damages grass killing the yard that you are working to maintain. It may also damage the engine as it dulls and goes out of balance. For the best results for your yard, check the blade at least once every two months. This is important to do for riding lawn mowers as well.
