The engine of your lawn mower, just like the one in your car, requires regular maintenance to continue running in optimal condition. There a number of simple measures that you can take to lengthen the lifetime of the engine and ensure you are getting the best possible cut possible for the yard. First of all, ensure that the gas your engine is high quality. Preferably, the gas burned should be 87 or higher octane rating. It is also important that the gas is not too old. Gas that is not used within about 30 days will begin to lose its octane, and when burned, it will leave behind residue in the gas lines and the motor itself.

As this residue continues to build, it will lead to poorer performance and possibly engine failure. Just as importantly, be sure to provide your mower's engine with the right kind of oil as recommended in the owner's manual of the mower. The oil should be drained and replaced every 50 hours of operation, or after the mower has been dormant for an extended period of time.
Spark plugs will also require replacement after about 100 hours of usage. Old spark plugs will eventually make it difficult or even impossible to start the mower. Information on the right type of spark plug you should be using will be in the owner's manual as well. Air filters must also be replaced periodically. This should be done every new season. If the filter is not too dirty, it may be sufficient to simply tap it out.
A great deal of buildup under the deck of the mower can eventually damage the blade. Disconnect the spark wire and turn the mower over to check for excessive build up. Wash out the mower housing and use a scraper if necessary to remove build up. While you are cleaning out the mower, take the opportunity to sharpen the blade. This should be done at least once every two months. A dull blade will damage grass as well as the mower engine. A dull blade may become unbalanced putting extra strain on the engine because of its uneven behavior.
To keep self propelled mowers working, check to see if the drive belt is worn or damaged. The gear housing should also be cleaned periodically to prevent a damaging build up of grass and dirt.
