For those with smaller lots such as a front yard, a walk behind mower may be an adequate choice when it comes to what kind of mower you need. For many home owners, a riding lawn mower may be a case of expensive overkill. Walk behind lawn mowers of all types can usually get the job done while costing significantly less than a riding mower. If you have a lot larger than two acres, however, a riding mower is most likely still the best choice.

Once you have decided on a walk behind mower, there are still several choices to be made. Do you want a manually operated reel mower, an electric corded/cordless mower, or a gas powered mower? These choices are fairly easy to make if you think about the requirements imposed by the lawn you will be working with. How big is your lawn? If the lot is large, then you will almost always want to go with a gas powered lawn mower.
With a smaller lot you can afford to look at other options. If the thought of having to wear ear plugs in order to hear yourself think makes you cringe, then consider a reel mower or electric mower. Besides cutting down on the enormous racket that a gas mower makes, these options are easier on the environment. They also do not require the routine maintenance that a gas mower requires. A gas motor must have the right amount of oil in order to function efficiently and also requires tune ups.
If you have a smaller lawn that you cut frequently, then an electric or even push mower might be a great choice. If the lawn accumulates a large amount of leaves and twigs, however, these mowers may be more frustration than they are worth; a push mower will not go over tall grass, twigs, or piles of leaves. An electric mower can cut tall grass and go over twigs and leaves, but this will quickly drain the battery. In these cases, it is still best to go with a gas powered mower.
Other considerations to take into account are whether you want to rake up clippings yourself, or have the mower bag them. The width of the cutting deck is also an important factor that will determine how many times you have to go back and forth over the lawn.
